Map of Ferries to Rangitoto Island
Ferry routes to Rangitoto Island depart from the busy downtown Auckland terminals, dropping you at the base of a dormant volcanic cone in just 25 minutes. Fullers360 acts as the largest operator in the Hauraki Gulf, shuttling over 100,000 hikers and day-trippers to this protected reserve annually. Look at the regional ferry map to plan your broader gulf itinerary heading east to Waiheke Island or north to Devonport. You must pack in all your own supplies and explore strictly on foot, as the island is completely devoid of paved roads and vehicle traffic.

The Volcanic Hop: Map of ferries to Rangitoto Island
Rangitoto is a dormant volcano sitting right in the harbor of Auckland. The largest ferry operator in the region is Fullers360. It is a very popular day trip for locals and tourists who want to hike through old lava fields to reach the top of the crater.
| Starting Port | Travel Time | Route Details |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland Downtown | 25 minutes | The main route. Leaves from the central city ferry building. |
| Devonport | 30 minutes | The boat from downtown often stops here on the way to pick up more people. |
Here are 3 tips for getting to Rangitoto Island by ferry:
- 1. Bring lots of water: There is absolutely no drinking water available on Rangitoto. You are hiking on black lava rocks in the sun, which gets very hot. Bring more water than you think you need.
- 2. Wear sturdy shoes: Do not hike the volcano in flip flops. The trails are made of sharp, uneven volcanic rock that will easily ruin weak shoes and hurt your feet.
- 3. Protect the pest free status: Just like Kapiti Island, Rangitoto is a pest free zone. Make sure your bags are zipped tight and your shoes are clean of dirt before you get on the boat in Auckland.
There is no accommodation on Rangitoto Island, and camping is illegal. You cannot stay overnight. When you arrive, ask the crew exactly what time the last boat leaves for Auckland. If you miss it, you will have to pay a very expensive fee for a private water taxi.
“The hike to the summit takes about an hour each way. It gets incredibly hot by midday because the black rocks reflect the sun. Take the earliest ferry possible in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds.”
