How to Reach Ios by Ferry
Drop your bags on the golden beaches of this Cycladic hotspot after a fast four-hour ride with Seajets or Blue Star Ferries from Athens. These operators move massive crowds of summer backpackers and vacationers directly into the bustling port of Yialos. Check the ferry map above to see how perfectly this island sits on the main shipping lanes, allowing for effortless hops south to Santorini or north to Naxos. Booking your tickets well in advance is critical here, as the passenger decks completely sell out during the peak July and August rush.

The Cyclades Center: How to reach Ios by ferry
Ios is located right in the heart of the Cyclades, sitting perfectly between the larger islands of Naxos and Santorini. The largest ferry operators in the region include SeaJets, Blue Star Ferries, and Golden Star Ferries. The island is incredibly busy in the summer, with the port handling over 250 weekly sailings to move tens of thousands of partygoers and beach lovers.
- The Santorini Hop: The easiest way to get to Ios is to fly into Santorini and catch a ferry north. The high-speed boats do this trip in just 35 to 45 minutes.
- From Athens: If you start at Piraeus port, a high-speed catamaran takes about 4 hours. The traditional slow ferry takes up to 7 hours but offers great views from the outside decks.
- Pricing (2026): Fast ferry tickets from Athens cost around โฌ70 to โฌ85. The short trip from Santorini is usually between โฌ35 and โฌ65. To compare options, check our guide on the cost of a ferry crossing in peak season.
The fast catamarans (like SeaJets) are great for saving time, but they have no outdoor decks and you must stay in your airplane-style seat. If the wind is blowing strong, the fast ride from Athens can be very bumpy. If you get seasick, book the slower Blue Star ferry instead.
“The port of Ios (Yialos) gets incredibly crowded in August. Thousands of young travelers arrive on the midday boats. If you are taking a bus up to Chora (the main village), get off the ferry and walk straight to the bus stop fast, or you will be waiting for the next one.”
