The Friendly Isle: Ferry map to Lopez Island
Getting to Lopez Island is the easiest trip in the San Juan Islands. The largest ferry operator in the region is Washington State Ferries. Because Lopez is usually the first stop on the route from the mainland, the boat ride is quick and very scenic.
| Starting Port | Travel Time | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Anacortes (Mainland) | 40 to 45 minutes | This is the main entry point. You must reserve a car spot online. |
| Friday Harbor (San Juan) | 35 minutes | Great for jumping between islands. The schedule changes daily. |
| Shaw Island | 20 minutes | A very short hop if you are exploring the smaller islands first. |
Here are 3 tips for getting to Lopez Island by ferry:
- 1. Make a car reservation: In the summer of 2026, you must book your car spot online weeks in advance. If you walk or bike onto the boat, you do not need a reservation.
- 2. It is free to leave: You only pay for your car when going westbound from Anacortes. The ferry ride back to the mainland from Lopez is completely free.
- 3. Bring your bicycle: Lopez is flat and very easy to bike around. Many people just park their car in Anacortes, walk onto the ferry with a bike, and save a lot of money.
Washington State Ferries rules are strict. Even with a reservation, you must drive through the Anacortes toll booth at least 30 minutes before your boat leaves. If you are even one minute late, you will lose your spot.
“Lopez is known as the friendly island. It is a local tradition to wave at every single car that passes you on the road. Do not forget to wave back when you leave the ferry terminal!”
