Our Koh Samui, Koh Tao ferry experience

Several ferry services operate between Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao. For example, you can sail with Seatrans, which also transports vehicles, or with Lomprayah High Speed Ferries. We chose Lomprayah's fast passenger service to travel between Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

Here’s what you can roughly expect from this crossing:

The boat departs from a beautiful part of the island Koh Samui with a lovely beach.
When you arrive, take a short walk to the check-in counter to show your booking. You will then receive your tickets. In our experience, booking in advance is a must.
You stick the stickers on your shirt so the Lomprayah staff can clearly see where you're going. The boat makes multiple stops, such as Koh Phangan.
Before boarding, you also need to have your luggage weighed.
After a bit of waiting, you can board. Don’t get in line too late; finding a good seat can be tricky.
The interior

As you can see from the sea's smooth surface, we had a calm crossing. If you pay close attention, you might spot flying fish leaping out of the water, startled by the ferry.

Please don’t smoke weed on board. It’s more considerate toward your fellow passengers. Still, not everyone seemed to notice these signs.

Our takeaways on this crossing

  • It was a pleasant crossing and everything was well organized, from the pier to arrival.
  • When you arrive on Koh Tao, you’ll need to pay a port fee in cash. From what we remember, it was about 20 Baht per person. So make sure to have some small bills with you.
  • Book your crossing in advance, as it can get crowded on board.
  • Make sure to have your sunscreen within reach, because if you're sitting on the upper deck, you'll be spending several hours in the sun.
